Xavier Malisse - 03/01/2003

Xavier Malisse, congratulations. That’s a sensational victory, keeping this tie alive. You must feel very proud of yourself.
Yeah, I feel pretty good. I think that this is the best match I’ve played since I’ve gotten here. I didn’t make any unnecessary errors, just a couple. I served very well. I think (it was a) really good match. It was a great crowd here and we’ve had some fun. It’s always fun to get one-all and then the doubles count.

You had a lot of break point opportunities, around eleven, I think. You only took two, was that a little bit frustrating at times?
It’s a little frustrating, but you’ve got to look at it the other side - if you keep giving yourself chances, sooner or later you’re going to take a couple. I got a little lucky in the tie-break. I got two set points and I got away with one good shot. In the second set I played better on the break points I had. I played a little more safer; a little more topspin on the ball, and it paid off.

A couple of years ago in the same tournament, you did meet James Blake and you beat him, but his game has escalated since then so you were really up for today’s match.
Yeah, it’s fun. It’s a little bit of pressure, that I had to win. Kim and Serena had a great match. But yeah, James has definitely improved a lot and he beat me last time 6-3, 6-1 pretty bad. Sometimes it goes his way and sometimes it goes my way, but I think in the future we’ll have some great matches.

What are the tactics for the mixed doubles? A bit of sugar, Kim Clijsters, are you going to inspire her today, perhaps?
We’ll just have fun, I think. You know, doubles (mixed) you’ve got to have fun. It’s something you don’t play very often and I know it’s for the win, but we’ve got to have fun just like we did yesterday, and we’ll see how the outcome goes.

Well it’s for a place in the final, good luck with that. Well played today.
Thank you.
